Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria bocasana is native to central Mexico, particularly San Luis Potosí, where it inhabits rocky mountainous slopes, grasslands, and open scrub vegetation. Plants grow in shallow, well-drained soils among rocks and grasses, often receiving partial protection from intense sunlight. The natural environment experiences warm summers, cooler winters, and seasonal rainfall. The splendens selection is cultivated for its particularly attractive spination and ornamental appearance rather than representing a clearly established separate wild population.

Description:

Mammillaria bocasana var. splendens is an attractive form of the Powder Puff Cactus, developing rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 2–5" tall and 2–3" in diameter. The green body is densely covered with fine, silky white radial spines, accompanied by longer central spines that may be yellowish, reddish-brown, or hooked. Mature plants gradually produce offsets, forming attractive clusters. Small creamy-white to pale pink flowers appear around the crown during spring, often followed by elongated reddish fruits. Seed-grown plants may vary in spine density and colouring.
