Pot Size: 6"
Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria melanocentra var. rubrograndis
Origin and Habitat:
Mammillaria melanocentra var. rubrograndis is native to Oaxaca, Mexico, where it grows on rocky limestone slopes and well-drained hillsides in seasonally dry environments. These habitats experience intense sunlight, warm temperatures, and periodic rainfall. The species has evolved dense spination and compact growth to withstand drought and protect itself from harsh environmental conditions. The variety rubrograndis is particularly prized for its exceptionally large reddish central spines and striking ornamental appearance.
Description:
This beautiful solitary to slowly clustering cactus forms globular to short cylindrical stems reaching approximately 4–8 inches tall and 4–6 inches wide. The dark green body is covered with neat white radial spines that contrast dramatically with the large ruby-red to reddish-brown central spines. During spring, mature plants produce rings of bright pink flowers around the crown, creating a stunning display against the colorful spination. Bright red fruits often follow flowering and remain ornamental for extended periods. Its combination of vivid spine coloration and compact size makes it a highly desirable species for collectors and container culture.
Cultivation
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: -2 to 35°C
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus soil containing pumice, gravel, and mineral aggregates
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing soil to dry completely between watering; keep relatively dry during winter dormancy
Fertilizing: Every 2–3 weeks during active growth using a diluted balanced fertilizer
Light: Full sun to bright light
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant; excessive moisture may lead to root rot and stem damage
Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed. Careful selection is often used to maintain strong red spine coloration and desirable growth characteristics.
