Oreocereus

Oreocereus

Oreocereus is a columnar growing genus of cacti only found in the high mountains of the Andes. White fuzzy wool covers all of the species to some degree. This feature has led to the name “Old Man of the Mountains” or “Old-man cactus” This is in fact an adaption to reduce air flow over their epidermis. They live in extremely dry high altitude mountain ranges, typically 10,000 feet or more, and have become survival specialists. Even though these cacti come from very arid mountains they are quite tolerant of winter conditions and can be grown in northern gardens with a little protection.
