Fouquieria
Fouquieria is a distinctive genus of drought-adapted shrubs and small trees in the family Fouquieriaceae, native primarily to arid regions of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Species such as Fouquieria splendens and Fouquieria diguetii develop sculptural, often spiny stems and small drought-deciduous leaves that emerge rapidly following rainfall or watering. Many species produce striking tubular red to orange flowers adapted for pollination by hummingbirds and other nectar-feeding animals. Their unusual architecture, seasonal growth cycle, and exceptional drought tolerance make Fouquieria highly desirable specimen plants for collectors of xerophytic and unusual succulents.
