Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria crinita DC. (broad taxonomic treatment)
Horticultural Name: Mammillaria zeilmanniana var. praecox

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria zeilmanniana is associated with central Mexico, particularly the mountainous regions of Guanajuato. Plants inhabit rocky slopes, dry grasslands, and open scrub vegetation, growing in shallow, well-drained soils among rocks and grasses. These environments experience warm summers, cool winters, and seasonal rainfall. The praecox form is known in horticulture for its association with early flowering, although its precise botanical status and distinct natural distribution are not consistently recognized.

Description:

Mammillaria zeilmanniana var. praecox is a compact, globular to short cylindrical cactus developing stems approximately 2–4" tall and 2–3" in diameter. The dark green body is covered with closely spaced conical tubercles bearing fine white radial spines and darker, often hooked central spines. Mature plants produce attractive pink to magenta flowers arranged in rings around the crown. The praecox selection is particularly associated with relatively early flowering under favourable growing conditions. Older plants may develop basal offsets and form small clusters.
