Accepted Scientific Name: Echinopsis Hans Bircher Hybrid 'California Orange'

Origin and Habitat
Echinopsis Hans Bircher Hybrid 'California Orange' is a cultivated hybrid developed by renowned German cactus breeder Hans Bircher. Created from carefully selected South American Echinopsis species native to Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, this hybrid combines vigorous growth with spectacular floral displays. Its parent species naturally inhabit rocky hillsides, grasslands, and well-drained mountain slopes where they experience warm summers, cool, dry winters, and seasonal rainfall. Bred specifically for exceptional flower size, vibrant colour, and reliable blooming, 'California Orange' is highly prized by collectors and flowering cactus enthusiasts.

Description
Echinopsis Hans Bircher Hybrid 'California Orange' is a compact, clustering cactus with rounded to short cylindrical dark green stems reaching 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) tall. Over time, plants produce numerous offsets, forming attractive clumps. From late spring through summer, mature specimens produce spectacular, fragrant flowers measuring up to 8 inches (20 cm) across. The brilliant blooms feature glowing orange petals with a bright golden-yellow throat, creating a dramatic display against the green stems. Flowers typically open during the evening and remain open into the following day, with mature plants often flowering several times throughout the growing season.

Cultivation

Zone: 9–11
Temperature: 5°C to 35°C
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast.
Soil: Use a sharply drained cactus soil containing pumice, coarse mineral aggregate, and organic matter. Avoid poorly drained soils or prolonged moisture.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil has completely dried during active growth. Keep nearly dry throughout winter dormancy.
Fertilizing: Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Light: Full sun to bright light. Light afternoon shade is beneficial in extremely hot climates while maintaining enough sunlight for abundant flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally develop mealybugs, spider mites, or scale insects. Excess moisture and poor drainage can cause root rot.

Propagation
Propagated from offsets. As a named hybrid, propagation by offsets preserves the distinctive flower colour and characteristics, while seed-grown plants will vary.
