Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria prolifera (Mill.) Haw.

Common Name: Texas Nipple Cactus

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria prolifera has a broad natural distribution extending from southern Texas through Mexico and parts of the Caribbean. It inhabits rocky slopes, dry woodlands, limestone outcrops, and open scrublands, often growing in shallow pockets of well-drained soil. These environments experience warm temperatures, seasonal rainfall, and extended dry periods. The species is highly adaptable and commonly forms dense colonies through the production of numerous offsets, allowing it to spread across suitable rocky habitats.

Description:

Mammillaria prolifera is a small, freely branching cactus that develops dense clusters of rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 1–3" tall and 1–2" in diameter. Each stem is covered with numerous fine radial spines, ranging from creamy white to golden yellow, accompanied by darker central spines. Mature plants produce small, creamy-white to pale yellow flowers around the crowns during spring and summer. Bright red, elongated fruits frequently follow flowering and provide additional ornamental interest. Its compact growth and prolific offset production make it an attractive container specimen.
