Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria candida Scheidw.

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria candida is native to northeastern and central Mexico, where it inhabits rocky limestone hillsides, dry grasslands, and open scrub vegetation. Plants frequently grow in shallow, mineral-rich soils among rocks and sparse grasses. These environments experience strong sunlight, warm summers, cooler winters, and seasonal rainfall. Its dense covering of fine white spines helps protect the plant from intense sunlight while giving it a distinctive silvery appearance.

Description:

Mammillaria candida, commonly known as the Snowball Cactus, is a slow-growing species forming rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 3–8" tall and 3–5" in diameter. Plants may remain solitary or gradually develop clusters. The green body is almost completely concealed beneath numerous fine, white radial spines, accompanied by slightly stronger central spines. Mature plants produce attractive pale pink to rosy-pink flowers, often with darker central stripes, arranged near the crown during spring. Its dense white spination and delicate flowers make it highly ornamental.
