Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria matudae Bravo

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria matudae is native to Mexico, particularly the state of México, where it inhabits rocky hillsides and mountainous environments. Plants grow in shallow pockets of mineral-rich soil, often among rocks, grasses, and sparse shrubs. Its natural habitat experiences warm days, cooler nights, and seasonal rainfall, with relatively dry periods during winter. The species is adapted to exposed, well-drained growing conditions and develops a distinctive elongated form as it matures.

Description:

Mammillaria matudae is a slow-growing cactus initially forming a compact, globular stem that gradually elongates into a slender column. Mature stems can reach approximately 8–12" tall and 1–2" in diameter, occasionally becoming longer and leaning with age. The dark green body is densely covered with small, conical tubercles bearing fine white radial spines and darker central spines. Mature plants produce attractive rings of small, bright pink to magenta flowers near the crown during spring and summer. Its narrow growth habit and colourful flowers make it a distinctive addition to cactus collections.
