Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria laui D.R.Hunt
Synonym: Mammillaria laui subsp. dasyacantha (D.R.Hunt) D.R.Hunt
Origin and Habitat:
Mammillaria laui subsp. dasyacantha is native to northeastern Mexico, particularly the mountainous regions of Tamaulipas. It inhabits rocky slopes, steep hillsides, and limestone outcrops, often growing in narrow crevices containing small amounts of mineral-rich soil. These environments experience warm summers, cool nights, and seasonal rainfall, with periods of limited moisture. Plants frequently grow partially sheltered by rocks or surrounding vegetation, providing protection from intense sunlight. Its compact size and dense covering of fine spines reflect its adaptation to these exposed mountainous habitats.
Description:
Mammillaria laui subsp. dasyacantha is a small, slow-growing cactus forming rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 1–3" tall and 1–2" in diameter. Plants may remain solitary or gradually develop small clusters. The green body is densely covered with numerous fine, white, hair-like radial spines that create a soft, silvery appearance. Shorter central spines may be present but are often concealed beneath the dense radial spination. Mature plants produce attractive pale pink to rosy-pink flowers near the crown during spring, contrasting beautifully with the white spines.
Cultivation:
Zone: 9–11; protect from prolonged frost and excessive winter moisture.
Temperature: Optimal growth at 18–26 °C. Maintain winter temperatures above 5 °C.
Growth Rate: Slow, gradually developing compact stems and occasional offsets.
Soil: A highly mineral, fast-draining mixture containing pumice, fine gravel, and limited organic matter.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth, allowing the medium to dry between waterings. Keep mostly dry during winter.
Fertilizing: Apply diluted cactus fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Bright filtered sunlight to gentle morning sun.
Pests and Diseases: Mealybugs, root mealybugs, spider mites, and root rot.

Temperature: 27 °C.
Surface Sown: Yes. Press seeds lightly onto a fine growing medium.
Germination Time: Approximately 7–28 days, sometimes longer.
Moisture: Maintain consistent moisture without saturation.
Light: Bright, indirect light.
After Germination: Gradually increase ventilation and introduce brighter light as seedlings establish.
