Alternative Classification: Mammillaria glassii var. nominis-dulcis A.B.Lau

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria glassii subsp. nominis-dulcis originates from northeastern Mexico, within the mountainous regions associated with the Sierra Madre Oriental. Plants inhabit rocky slopes and exposed limestone environments, often growing in narrow soil pockets among rocks and sparse vegetation. These locations experience warm days, cool nights, and seasonal rainfall, with periods of limited moisture. The plants are adapted to excellent drainage and develop dense coverings of fine spines that help protect their compact stems.

Description:

Mammillaria glassii subsp. nominis-dulcis is a small, freely clustering cactus forming rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 1–4" tall and 1–2" in diameter. Numerous fine, white, hair-like radial spines create a soft, silvery appearance, while a few slightly stronger central spines may be present. The plants gradually form attractive cushions of closely packed stems. Compared with typical Mammillaria glassii, this form is especially valued for its relatively large, pale pink to creamy-pink flowers, which appear near the stem crowns during spring.
