Accepted Scientific Name: Mammillaria herrerae Boed.

Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria herrerae is a Mexican cactus associated with the mountainous regions of western Mexico. It grows in rocky terrain, often occupying shallow pockets of mineral-rich soil among exposed slopes and sparse vegetation. These habitats experience strong sunlight, warm days, cooler nights, and seasonal rainfall. Like many mountain-dwelling Mammillaria species, it is adapted to excellent drainage and relatively dry conditions during cooler periods. Its compact growth and attractive flowers have made it desirable among specialist cactus collectors.

Description:

Mammillaria herrerae is a small, slow-growing cactus forming solitary or occasionally clustering globular to short cylindrical stems approximately 2–5" tall and 2–4" in diameter. The green body develops pronounced conical tubercles bearing slender, pale radial spines and stronger central spines that may be darker or slightly curved. Mature plants produce attractive pink to magenta flowers near the crown during spring and early summer. Its compact form, decorative spination, and colourful flowers make it a desirable collector's cactus.
