Origin and Habitat:

Mammillaria bombycina is native to Mexico, particularly the mountainous regions of Aguascalientes and Jalisco. It inhabits rocky slopes, cliffs, and dry scrublands, frequently growing in crevices and shallow pockets of mineral-rich soil. These environments experience warm summers, cool winters, and seasonal rainfall followed by extended dry periods. The species is adapted to rocky, well-drained conditions and is especially recognizable for its attractive combination of silky white spines and darker hooked central spines.

Description:

Mammillaria bombycina is a highly ornamental cactus forming rounded to short cylindrical stems approximately 3–8" tall and 2–4" in diameter. Mature plants frequently produce offsets, developing dense clusters. The green body is covered with prominent conical tubercles bearing numerous fine, silky white radial spines and stronger reddish-brown central spines, several of which are distinctly hooked. White wool develops between the tubercles, particularly near the growing crown. Brilliant pink to magenta flowers appear in attractive rings around the crown during spring and summer.
