Year: 2021

Accepted Scientific Name:
Ferocactus latispinus (Haw.) Britton & Rose

Origin and Habitat:
Ferocactus latispinus is native to Mexico, where it occurs across portions of the central and southern Mexican plateau. It inhabits dry scrublands, rocky slopes, grasslands, and open areas with mineral-rich, rapidly draining soils. Plants are adapted to intense sunlight, seasonal rainfall, and extended dry periods. Its natural habitat is generally warm and arid to semi-arid, although established plants can tolerate relatively cool winter temperatures when kept dry.

Description:
Ferocactus latispinus, commonly called the Devil’s Tongue Barrel Cactus, is a distinctive barrel cactus valued for its broad, flattened central spines. Young plants are globular, gradually becoming somewhat flattened to short cylindrical with age. Mature plants generally reach 10–16" tall and 12–16" wide. The prominent central spine is broad, flattened, hooked downward, and typically reddish to reddish-brown, contrasting with lighter radial spines. Mature plants produce attractive funnel-shaped flowers near the crown, usually in shades of violet-purple, pinkish purple, or occasionally reddish purple.

Cultivation:
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: Best growth at 20–30 °C; established dry plants can tolerate brief temperatures near freezing, but protection from frost is recommended.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, with seedlings developing more quickly under warm, bright conditions.
Soil: Use a highly porous cactus mix containing generous amounts of pumice or other mineral material. Excellent drainage is essential.
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry substantially between waterings. Reduce watering considerably during cool weather and keep nearly dry during winter dormancy.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer periodically during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing during winter.
Light: Bright light to full sun. Young seedlings should initially be protected from intense midday sun and gradually acclimated as they mature.
Pests and Diseases: Generally trouble-free when grown under dry, well-ventilated conditions. Watch for mealybugs, scale insects, and root rot caused by excessive moisture.

Germination Info:
Temperature: 27 °C
Surface Sown: Yes. Sow on the surface of a fine, moist, well-draining cactus seed mix and gently press the seeds into the medium. Maintain warm temperatures and consistent humidity during germination. Once seedlings are established, gradually increase ventilation.
