Accepted Scientific Name: Echinocereus subinermis

Origin and Habitat:

Native to the rocky hillsides of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico, Echinocereus subinermis thrives in arid, well-drained environments at elevations between 800 and 1,800 meters. This species is typically found in limestone-rich soil, often growing among shrubs and other desert vegetation. It has adapted to withstand prolonged dry spells and intense sunlight by developing a water-retentive stem and a reduced spine structure. The natural habitat experiences hot summers and cool winters, with occasional rainfall that supports seasonal flowering and growth. This cactus is particularly notable for its tolerance to drought and its ability to flourish in nutrient-poor soils.

Description:

A small, globular to cylindrical cactus, Echinocereus subinermis grows up to 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. Unlike many Echinocereus species, it has relatively sparse, soft spines, giving it a smoother appearance. The plant is highly ornamental, producing large, showy, funnel-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer. The blooms are bright yellow with a darker yellow or orange throat, reaching up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. These vibrant flowers contrast beautifully against the green stem, making it a standout species in any collection.
