Pot Size: 4.5"

Accepted Scientific Name: Cereus forbesii cv. 'Spiralis'

Origin and Habitat:
Cereus forbesii is native to the dry grasslands, rocky hillsides, and semi-arid regions of Argentina and Paraguay, where it grows in well-drained mineral soils under intense sunlight and seasonal rainfall. The cultivar 'Spiralis' is a rare horticultural selection distinguished by its naturally twisting stems rather than the straight columns typical of the species. This remarkable growth mutation has made it one of the world's most recognizable collector cacti, prized for its sculptural form and outstanding architectural appeal.

Description:
Cereus forbesii cv. 'Spiralis' develops striking blue-green columnar stems that naturally twist into elegant spiral columns as they mature. Plants typically reach 60–120 inches tall in cultivation while maintaining a narrow spread of approximately 6–24 inches. The stems possess 5–7 prominent ribs lined with evenly spaced areoles bearing short gray to brown spines that accentuate the dramatic spiral form. Mature specimens may produce large fragrant white flowers that open at night during summer, followed by ornamental reddish fruits. Its unique corkscrew growth habit makes it one of the finest statement plants for containers, modern landscapes, xeriscapes, and serious cactus collections.

Cultivation
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: 0 to 40°C
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus soil containing pumice, gravel, and mineral aggregates
Watering: Water deeply during active growth, allowing soil to dry completely between watering; reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy
Fertilizing: Every 2–3 weeks during active growth using a diluted balanced fertilizer
Light: Full sun to bright light
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant; excessive moisture may lead to root rot and stem damage

Propagation:
Maintained almost exclusively by stem cuttings to preserve the distinctive spiral growth habit. Cuttings should be allowed to callus thoroughly before planting into dry, well-drained growing media.
