Pot Size: 8"

Accepted Scientific Name: Cereus forbesii ‘Spiralis’

Origin and Habitat:
Cereus forbesii is native to South America, particularly Argentina and Paraguay, where it grows in dry grasslands, rocky hillsides, and semi-arid environments. The cultivar ‘Spiralis’ is a rare naturally occurring mutation selected for its remarkable twisted growth pattern. Unlike typical columnar Cereus species, the stems develop an elegant spiral form that has made this cactus one of the most sought-after architectural plants in cultivation. Its ability to tolerate heat, drought, and bright sunlight makes it an exceptional specimen for containers, conservatories, and xeriscape gardens.

Description:
Cereus forbesii ‘Spiralis’ forms upright blue-green columns that twist naturally as they grow, creating a dramatic corkscrew appearance. Mature plants may reach 60–120 inches tall in cultivation while remaining relatively narrow at 6–24 inches wide. The stems are ribbed with small clusters of short spines and develop a striking sculptural form that becomes more pronounced with age. Mature specimens may produce large nocturnal white flowers followed by colorful fruits. The unusual spiral growth habit makes this one of the most distinctive and desirable columnar cacti available to collectors.

Cultivation
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: 0 to 40°C
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus soil containing pumice, gravel, and mineral aggregates
Watering: Water deeply during active growth, allowing soil to dry completely between watering; reduce watering significantly during winter
Fertilizing: Every 2–3 weeks during active growth using a diluted balanced fertilizer
Light: Full sun to bright light
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest resistant; overwatering may cause root rot and stem damage

Propagation:
Usually propagated from stem cuttings to maintain the characteristic spiral growth habit. Cuttings root readily when allowed to callus before planting.
