Accepted Scientific Name: Astrophytum capricorne (A.Dietr.) Britton & Rose

Origin and Habitat:

Astrophytum capricorne is a distinctive cactus species native to northeastern Mexico, primarily in the states of Coahuila and Nuevo León. It inhabits the arid and semi-arid regions of the Chihuahuan Desert, growing on rocky limestone slopes, gravelly hillsides, and among sparse desert vegetation. These environments experience intense sunlight, hot summers, cool winters, and limited seasonal rainfall. Plants are often found partially sheltered among rocks and low-growing shrubs, where mineral-rich soils provide excellent drainage. The species is well adapted to prolonged dry conditions and is particularly valued for its unusual curved spines and attractive flowers.

Description:

Astrophytum capricorne, commonly known as Goat's Horn Cactus, is a slow-growing, solitary cactus characterized by its globular to cylindrical shape and distinctive long, twisted spines resembling the curved horns of a goat. Mature plants typically reach 6–12" tall and 4–6" in diameter, occasionally growing taller with age. The dark green to grey-green body features 7–9 prominent ribs, often decorated with small white woolly flecks. Each areole produces several long, flexible, brown to grey spines that curve and intertwine around the plant. Mature specimens produce large, funnel-shaped, bright yellow flowers approximately 2–3" across, featuring a contrasting deep red to orange-red throat. Flowers emerge from the crown during spring and summer, followed by small fruits containing dark seeds. Its architectural form and dramatic spination make it a desirable addition to cactus collections.

Cultivation:

Zone: 9–11; protect from prolonged frost and excessive winter moisture.
Temperature: Optimal growth at 20–30 °C. Maintain winter temperatures above 5 °C for reliable cultivation.
Growth Rate: Slow, gradually developing from a globular seedling into a more elongated, cylindrical plant with age.
Soil: A highly mineral, fast-draining cactus mixture containing pumice, fine gravel, crushed limestone, and a small proportion of organic matter. Excellent drainage is essential for healthy root development.
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during autumn and keep mostly dry during winter dormancy.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth. Discontinue feeding during winter.
Light: Bright light to full sun. Provide some protection from intense afternoon sunlight during extreme heat, particularly for young plants.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, root mealybugs, spider mites, and root rot caused by excessive moisture or poorly draining growing media.

Germination Info:

Temperature: 27 °C.
Surface Sown: Yes. Sow seeds on the surface of a fine, sterilized cactus growing medium and press lightly into place without burying deeply. A very thin covering of fine mineral material is optional.
Germination Time: Approximately 7–21 days under favourable conditions, although some seeds may require longer.
Moisture: Maintain consistent surface moisture and high humidity during germination, avoiding waterlogged conditions.
Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight on covered seed trays.
After Germination: Gradually increase ventilation as seedlings establish. Maintain moderate moisture until young plants develop stronger root systems and begin producing characteristic spines.
