Origin and Habitat
Agave titanota is native to southwestern Puebla and northwestern Oaxaca, Mexico, where it occurs in seasonally dry habitats, including rocky limestone terrain. ‘Black and Blue’ is a cultivated selection valued for the dramatic contrast between its blue-grey foliage and exceptionally dark marginal teeth. The species is adapted to strong light, seasonal drought, and highly free-draining mineral soils.
Description
Agave titanota ‘Black and Blue’, often abbreviated as B&B, is a highly ornamental collector Agave forming a compact rosette of thick, broad, sculptural leaves. The foliage develops a distinctive powdery blue to blue-grey colour contrasted by prominent dark brown to nearly black marginal teeth and a strong terminal spine. Mature plants develop an increasingly bold, architectural appearance, with the heavy teeth leaving decorative impressions on adjacent leaves. ‘Black and Blue’ remains relatively compact compared with many larger Agaves and is particularly well suited to container culture.
Cultivation
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: Best grown at approximately 10–30 °C; established plants can tolerate brief temperatures near –4 °C when kept dry, but protection from frost is recommended for container-grown specimens.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate, gradually developing a dense, well-defined rosette.
Soil: Use an exceptionally porous cactus and succulent mix containing generous pumice or similar mineral material. Excellent drainage is essential.
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering substantially during cool winter conditions.
Fertilizing: Feed lightly during spring and summer with a dilute, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Avoid excessive feeding.
Light: Bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, blue-grey foliage, and stronger spine definition. Acclimatize gradually to intense direct sunlight.
Pests and Diseases: Generally trouble-free when grown dry and well ventilated. Watch for mealybugs and scale. Excess moisture or poorly drained soil can cause root and crown rot.
Propagation
Propagate from offsets when produced. Remove established offsets carefully, allow damaged surfaces to dry before potting, and establish them in a porous mineral-rich growing medium. Maintaining named ‘Black and Blue’ characteristics requires vegetative propagation rather than seed.
