Pot Size: 6"

Accepted Scientific Name: Oreocereus trollii

Origin and Habitat:
Oreocereus trollii is native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia and northern Argentina, where it grows on rocky mountain slopes at elevations exceeding 3,000 metres. In habitat, plants experience intense sunlight, strong winds, dramatic temperature fluctuations, and occasional snowfall. The species has evolved a dense covering of long white hairs that protect the stem from ultraviolet radiation, freezing temperatures, and moisture loss. These adaptations make it one of the most distinctive and beautiful high-elevation cacti in cultivation.

Description:
Oreocereus trollii is a slow-growing columnar cactus that develops upright stems reaching 24–60 inches tall and 6–12 inches wide over time. The blue-green stem is almost completely concealed beneath a thick coat of long silky white hairs, creating the appearance of a snow-covered column. Hidden among the wool are stout yellow to reddish spines that provide additional protection. Mature specimens produce striking tubular flowers in shades of pink to red near the upper portions of the stem. Its dramatic appearance and exceptional texture make it a prized specimen for cactus collectors, containers, and dry garden displays.

Cultivation
Zone: 8b–11
Temperature: -8 to 35°C
Growth Rate: Slow
Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus soil containing pumice, gravel, and mineral aggregates
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing soil to dry completely between watering; keep relatively dry during winter
Fertilizing: Every 2–3 weeks during active growth using a diluted balanced fertilizer
Light: Full sun to bright light
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant; excessive moisture may cause root rot and damage the protective woolly covering

Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed. Seedlings develop their characteristic woolly covering as they mature.
