Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name: Orbea speciosa
Origin and Habitat
Orbea speciosa is a succulent Asclepiad native to East Africa, where it grows in seasonally dry habitats among rocks, scrub, and open vegetation. Plants are adapted to warm conditions, irregular rainfall, and porous soils that drain rapidly. Its fleshy stems store moisture during dry periods, while the unusual flowers are specialized to attract flies for pollination.
Description
Orbea speciosa is a spectacular flowering succulent grown for its large, intricately patterned blooms. The plant develops thick, angular green stems with prominent pointed teeth, gradually branching to form spreading clumps. As shown in our plants, the remarkable five-pointed flowers have a bright golden-yellow background densely patterned with irregular burgundy to dark maroon spots and markings. The broad triangular lobes are edged with fine dark hairs, while the centre forms an elaborate concentric pattern surrounding the small corona. Flowers may produce a noticeable scent to attract their natural fly pollinators. The combination of dramatic flowers and unusual succulent stems makes this an exceptional collector's Asclepiad.
Cultivation
Zone: 10–11
Temperature: 12–30°C; protect from frost and temperatures below approximately 8°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate during warm, active growth.
Soil: Very porous cactus and succulent mix amended generously with pumice.
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry well between waterings. Keep substantially drier during cool winter conditions.
Fertilizing: Feed monthly with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer during active growth.
Light: Bright filtered light to partial sun. Morning or late-afternoon sun encourages strong growth and flowering; protect from intense midday summer sun.
Pests and Diseases: Watch for mealybugs, particularly around stem bases and roots. Stem and root rot can develop when plants remain cold and wet.
Propagation
Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus thoroughly before planting in a porous growing medium. Plants can also be propagated from seed.
