Accepted Scientific Name: Erioscyce taltalensis var. floccosa

Origin and Habitat:

Natively found along the coastal deserts of northern Chile, Erioscyce taltalensis var. floccosa thrives in rocky, well-draining soils at elevations between 200 and 1,500 meters. It is commonly located in dry, arid environments with sparse vegetation, where fog provides occasional moisture. The habitat experiences extreme temperature variations, intense sun exposure, and infrequent rainfall. This variety has adapted to these conditions by developing dense woolly areoles and a deep root system, allowing it to store water efficiently and endure prolonged drought.

Description:

A small, globular to slightly cylindrical cactus, Erioscyce taltalensis var. floccosa grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall and 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter. The dark green to bluish stem is covered in dense white wool, especially around the areoles, giving it a distinctive appearance. Sharp, rigid spines emerge from the woolly areoles, varying in color from yellowish to black. In spring, the plant produces bright yellow to pale orange flowers, often with a darker center. The funnel-shaped blooms contrast beautifully against the wool-covered body, making this variety highly desirable for collectors.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 10-35°C; tolerates brief drops to 0°C if kept dry.
Growth Rate: Slow-growing but long-lived.
Soil: Requires a well-draining substrate with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between watering. Reduce significantly in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light enhances wool development and flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; ensure good air circulation.
