Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name: Agave ovatifolia ‘Frosty Blue’
Origin and Habitat:
Agave ovatifolia is native to the rugged limestone mountains of northeastern Mexico, particularly in the states of Nuevo León and Coahuila. It grows on steep rocky slopes and canyon walls where rainfall is limited, temperatures fluctuate widely, and soils are extremely well-drained. These harsh conditions have produced a remarkably tough species with exceptional drought tolerance and cold hardiness. ‘Frosty Blue’ is a selected form prized for its broad powder-blue leaves, symmetrical rosette, and outstanding landscape performance in both arid and cold-climate gardens.
Description:
Agave ‘Frosty Blue’ forms a spectacular solitary rosette reaching 36–48 inches tall and 48–72 inches wide at maturity. The thick, broad leaves are heavily coated in a frosty blue wax that gives the plant its distinctive coloration. Each leaf is gracefully cupped with prominent bud imprints along the margins and terminates in a stout dark terminal spine. The symmetrical rosette resembles a giant blue artichoke and serves as a dramatic focal point in xeriscapes, rock gardens, and containers. Mature plants eventually produce an impressive flowering stalk up to 10–15 feet tall bearing clusters of greenish-yellow flowers that attract pollinators.
Cultivation
Zone: 7–11
Temperature: -20 to 35°C
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil: Extremely well-draining soil containing pumice and mineral aggregates; thrives in rocky soils
Watering: Water sparingly once established; allow soil to dry completely between watering
Fertilizing: Every 2–3 weeks during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer
Light: Full sun for best color, form, and growth
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest resistant; monitor for agave snout weevil, scale insects, and rot caused by excessive moisture
Propagation:
Primarily propagated from seed. Mature plants occasionally produce offsets which can be removed and rooted separately. Seed-grown plants develop strong, symmetrical rosettes and are highly valued for landscape use.
