Accepted Scientific Name: Ferocactus gracilis

Origin and Habitat:
Native to northwestern Mexico, Ferocactus gracilis thrives in arid desert regions, particularly in Baja California. It is well adapted to rocky slopes and sandy plains, where it endures intense sunlight and minimal rainfall. The species relies on its deep root system and thick stem to store water, allowing it to survive prolonged droughts.

Description:
Ferocactus gracilis is a solitary, barrel-shaped cactus that can grow up to 36 inches (90 cm) tall and 12 inches (30 cm) wide. It features prominent, deep ribs lined with long, slender, reddish spines. During summer, it produces bright yellow to orange funnel-shaped flowers, adding a striking contrast to its spiny exterior.

Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA Zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15-40°C and is highly heat-tolerant.
Growth Rate: Slow-growing but long-lived.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the active growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun; strong light enhances spine coloration and plant health.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot if overwatered; ensure good airflow and drainage.
