Accepted Scientific Name: Notocactus uebelmannianus

Origin and Habitat:

Notocactus uebelmannianus is native to southern Brazil and parts of Uruguay, where it thrives in well-draining, rocky soils. It is commonly found in grasslands and hilly regions with seasonal rainfall and warm temperatures. This species experiences periods of drought, making it well-adapted to arid conditions. The habitat provides ample sunlight, with occasional shade from surrounding vegetation.

Description:

This globular cactus reaches about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in diameter and develops into a slightly cylindrical shape with age. It features well-defined ribs lined with golden to reddish-brown spines. The most striking feature of Notocactus uebelmannianus is its vibrant flowers, which can range from deep magenta to rich purple, with a contrasting yellow center. These large, showy blooms emerge at the crown of the plant during the growing season, attracting pollinators.

Watering: Water moderately in the growing season, allowing soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
