Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Pastel'
Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum 'Pastel' is a cultivated hybrid derived from alpine Sempervivum species, which are native to the high-altitude, rocky slopes of central and southern Europe. These habitats are known for their minimal soil, intense light exposure, and extreme temperature fluctuations. 'Pastel' was developed by hybridizers seeking softer, more muted color tones, offering a unique alternative to the bold hues of traditional hens-and-chicks varieties. While not found in the wild, it retains its ancestral ability to survive with little water, poor soil, and significant cold exposure, making it ideal for use in rock gardens, troughs, and containers in temperate climates.
Description:
Sempervivum 'Pastel' forms charming, symmetrical rosettes that range from 3 to 4 inches in diameter. The leaves are smooth, fleshy, and display a gentle blend of soft pinks, light greens, and pale lilacs—especially prominent in spring and autumn when temperatures are cooler. The plant maintains a neat, geometric shape. In mid to late summer, mature rosettes produce tall flower stalks bearing clusters of star-shaped, soft pink flowers. The blooming rosette dies post-flower, but new offsets quickly fill in, preserving the mound.
Cultivation:
Zone: USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8
Temperature: Tolerates -30°C to 27°C
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil: Requires fast-draining, mineral-based soil with pumice for proper aeration and drainage
Watering: Water thoroughly when dry; avoid constant moisture to prevent rot
Fertilizing: Feed every 2–3 weeks with a diluted, balanced fertilizer during the growing season
Light: Full sun preferred for strongest coloration; light shade tolerated in hot climates
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant; watch for aphids or root rot under excessively moist conditions
Propagation:
Propagates easily by removing and planting offsets around the base of the mother plant.
