Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Pacific Red'
Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum 'Pacific Red' is a cultivated variety developed from alpine species of the Sempervivum genus, which are native to mountainous regions across central and southern Europe, such as the Alps and Balkan ranges. These areas feature rocky outcrops, sparse nutrient conditions, and seasonal extremes in temperature. This cultivar was selectively bred in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States for its intense red coloration and cold resilience. Though not found in the wild, it retains the hardiness and drought tolerance of its mountain ancestors, thriving in similar conditions including container gardens, green roofs, and xeriscapes.
Description:
Sempervivum 'Pacific Red' forms tight, low-growing rosettes measuring 3 to 5 inches in diameter. The pointed, fleshy leaves are rich red to burgundy, especially vibrant in cooler weather and full sun. The rosettes maintain a symmetrical shape, making them ideal for ornamental planting. During summer, mature rosettes produce tall, upright stalks topped with star-shaped pink to reddish flowers. After blooming, the flowering rosette dies, giving way to vigorous offsets that fill in the space.
Cultivation:
Zone: USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8
Temperature: Tolerates from -30°C to 28°C
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Soil: Requires gritty, fast-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot
Watering: Water deeply but only when soil is completely dry; overwatering will cause rot
Fertilizing: Apply diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the active growing season
Light: Full sun recommended for best red coloration; partial shade tolerated
Pests and Diseases: Typically pest-resistant; may experience aphids or root rot if conditions are overly moist or poorly drained
Propagation:
Propagated easily by removing offsets and replanting them in well-draining, pumice-rich soil.
