Pot Size: 3.5"

Accepted Scientific Name:

Sempervivum 'Lavender Ice'

Origin and Habitat:

Sempervivum species, commonly known as hens and chicks, originate from the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, where they thrive in rocky, well-draining soils. Adapted to extreme conditions, they withstand freezing winters, intense summer heat, and drought. They naturally grow in crevices, slopes, and alpine meadows, making them excellent for rock gardens and container planting.

Description:

Sempervivum Lavender Ice forms dense, symmetrical rosettes reaching 4-6 inches in height and up to 8 inches in width. The fleshy leaves display a unique lavender-pink hue with a frosty, silvery sheen, intensifying in cooler temperatures. In summer, mature rosettes produce tall flower stalks with star-shaped, pink flowers that attract pollinators.

Cultivation:

Zone: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
Temperature: Tolerates extreme temperatures from -30°C to 30°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate, spreading through offsets.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice for healthy root development.
Watering: Drought-tolerant; water deeply when dry, reducing frequency in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to maintain vibrant coloration but can tolerate partial shade.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may attract aphids or mealybugs. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Propagation:

Easily propagated by separating offsets from the mother plant. Replant in well-draining soil and water lightly until established.
