Pot Size: 3.5"

Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Icicle'

Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum 'Icicle' is a cultivated hybrid selected for its unique coloration and cold resistance, descending from mountain-native Sempervivum species found in the alpine regions of Europe, especially the Pyrenees and Alps. These areas are known for extreme temperatures, rocky terrain, and sparse soil. The plant was bred to maintain the durability of its wild ancestors while offering ornamental appeal for cold and dry climates. Its genetic heritage enables it to thrive in tough environments with minimal nutrients and intense seasonal changes, making it an ideal choice for rock gardens and green roofs.

Description:
Sempervivum 'Icicle' forms compact, symmetrical rosettes between 3 to 5 inches in diameter. The fleshy leaves are green to silvery-white, often with fine cobweb-like filaments at the tips, enhancing its frosty, crystalline appearance. In summer, mature rosettes produce upright flower stalks adorned with clusters of star-shaped, pinkish-lavender blooms. After flowering, the rosette dies, leaving space for offsets to mature. The icy color tones make it a standout in mixed succulent arrangements.

Cultivation:
Zone: USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8
Temperature: Tolerates -30°C to 28°C
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil: Requires fast-draining soil mixed with pumice for optimal root health
Watering: Deep but infrequent watering; allow soil to completely dry out before rewatering
Fertilizing: Use diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer
Light: Prefers full sun for best color and compact growth; tolerates some light shade
Pests and Diseases: Resistant to most pests; overwatering may lead to root or crown rot, especially in poorly drained soil

Propagation:
Easily propagated by separating offsets (chicks) from the base of the mother rosette and replanting in dry, pumice-rich soil.
