Pot Size: 2.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Gold Nugget'
Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum 'Gold Nugget' is a cultivated hybrid, developed from mountain-dwelling species native to central and southern Europe, particularly the Alps and the Carpathians. These hardy succulents naturally thrive in rocky, well-drained alpine environments with fluctuating temperatures and intense sunlight. The cultivar was bred for vibrant seasonal color shifts and exceptional cold resistance, making it well-suited for temperate gardens across the globe.
Description:
This compact succulent forms tight rosettes approximately 3 to 5 inches in diameter. Each rosette is made of thick, fleshy leaves that turn golden-yellow with rose-pink tips in colder months, creating a dramatic contrast. In summer, mature rosettes produce a tall flower stalk bearing star-shaped, reddish-pink blooms that attract pollinators. The geometric symmetry and shifting colors make this a standout in rock gardens or containers.
Cultivation:
Zone: USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 8
Temperature: Tolerates from -29°C to 30°C
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil: Requires well-drained, gritty soil amended with pumice for optimal aeration and drainage
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings
Fertilizing: Apply diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth in spring and summer
Light: Prefers full sun for best coloration; tolerates partial shade
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may attract aphids, mealybugs, or suffer from rot if overwatered
Propagation:
Easily propagated through offsets (chicks), which can be separated from the main rosette (hen) and replanted.
