Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Cono'
Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum 'Cono' is a cultivated variety of the Sempervivum genus, which originates from mountainous regions of central and southern Europe, including the Alps, Apennines, and the Balkans. These environments are characterized by well-drained rocky soils, high UV exposure, and dramatic seasonal changes. 'Cono' inherits the resilience and adaptability of these alpine ancestors but was selectively bred for its distinct conical form and ornamental leaf coloring. Although not a naturally occurring wild species, its performance in poor soils and variable climates makes it well suited for rock gardens, green roofs, and container displays in temperate regions.
Description:
Sempervivum 'Cono' forms rosettes that reach about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, distinguished by their tight, slightly raised cone-like shape. The leaves are firm, pointed, and arranged symmetrically with tones ranging from dusty green to muted red, deepening with cold exposure. In mid-summer, mature rosettes produce thick stalks bearing clusters of star-shaped flowers in soft pink to rose tones. The flowering rosette will naturally die back post-bloom, allowing surrounding offsets to take over.
Cultivation:
Zone: USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8
Temperature: Tolerates -30°C to 27°C
Growth Rate: Moderate
Soil: Requires sharply draining soil with pumice for aeration and to avoid water retention
Watering: Allow soil to fully dry between deep waterings; avoid excess moisture to prevent rot
Fertilizing: Use diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season
Light: Full sun preferred for best color and compact growth; tolerates partial shade
Pests and Diseases: Resistant to most pests; occasionally affected by aphids or crown rot if overwatered
Propagation:
Propagates easily through offsets (chicks); detach and plant them in well-draining soil for best results.
