Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sempervivum 'Cono'
Origin and Habitat:
Sempervivum species, commonly known as hens and chicks, are native to the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia. These hardy succulents thrive in rocky outcrops, alpine meadows, and crevices where they endure extreme temperature fluctuations. Adapted to drought and poor soils, they require minimal care and are well-suited for container gardening, green roofs, and rock gardens.
Description:
Sempervivum Cono forms tight, symmetrical rosettes that grow up to 4-6 inches in height and spread to about 8 inches. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and exhibit a deep green color with reddish tips that intensify in bright sunlight. In summer, mature rosettes send up tall flower stalks bearing clusters of star-shaped, pink flowers, which attract pollinators.
Cultivation:
Zone: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
Temperature: Withstands extreme conditions from -30°C to 30°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate, spreading through offsets.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Drought-tolerant; water when soil is dry, reducing watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers full sun for best coloration but can tolerate partial shade.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-resistant but may attract aphids or mealybugs. Overwatering can cause fungal infections or root rot.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by separating offsets from the mother plant. Allow offsets to establish in well-draining soil with minimal watering.
