Accepted Scientific Name:  Sedum pachypyllum

Origin and Habitat
Sedum pachypyllum is native to the high-altitude regions of central Mexico, particularly areas with rocky slopes, volcanic outcrops, and semi-arid scrubland vegetation. These habitats feature porous, fast-draining soils and experience warm, dry conditions for much of the year, with cooler nights and occasional seasonal rainfall. Strong sunlight, low humidity, and significant diurnal temperature swings shape the plant’s thick, water-storing leaves and compact form. In cultivation, these environmental patterns inform its need for bright light, low moisture retention, and excellent drainage to maintain healthy growth.

Description
Sedum pachypyllum forms clusters of short stems topped with plump, finger-shaped leaves that range from blue-green to silvery green, often developing red tips in bright light or cool temperatures. Plants typically reach 6–12 inches tall and 6–10 inches wide, forming a dense, shrubby clump. Leaves are smooth, cylindrical, and heavily glaucous. Flowers appear in summer on short inflorescences and are small, star-shaped, and bright yellow.

Cultivation
Zone: Suitable for Zones 9–11.
Temperature: Prefers 10–30°C; protect from temperatures below 0–2°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate growth with faster development in warm seasons.
Soil: Use a fast-draining succulent mix heavily amended with pumice to prevent moisture retention.
Watering: Water moderately during the active growing season; reduce considerably during winter rest or prolonged cool periods. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted low-nitrogen fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Provide bright light to full sun for compact stems and strong colour. Indoors, place in the brightest available location to prevent stretching.
Pests and Diseases: Monitor for mealybugs, aphids, and rot caused by poor drainage. Good airflow and proper drying cycles are essential.

Propagation
Propagation is simple by leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, or division. Allow cut surfaces to callus before planting for dependable rooting.
