Accepted Scientific Name:
Sedum hybridum 'Immergrünchen'
Origin and Habitat
Sedum hybridum 'Immergrünchen' is a cultivated variety developed for garden use, likely derived from species native to mountainous regions of Eurasia, particularly in areas such as the Caucasus, Central Asia, and parts of Eastern Europe. These environments are marked by rocky terrain, seasonal temperature shifts, and well-draining soils with low fertility. The hybrid inherits the drought tolerance and cold-hardiness typical of stonecrops, making it well-suited to rock gardens, slopes, containers, and xeriscapes. It thrives in habitats that mimic alpine or steppe conditions, tolerating both summer drought and winter frost.
Description
This mat-forming perennial reaches approximately 4 to 6 inches in height and spreads 12 to 18 inches wide. It features dense, evergreen foliage comprised of succulent, spoon-shaped leaves that remain vibrant green through the seasons. In early to midsummer, it produces small, star-shaped golden-yellow flowers held above the foliage in loose clusters, adding a bright accent to its low-growing form. Its attractive foliage and sunny blooms make it an excellent ground cover or border edging plant.
Cultivation
Zone USDA Zones 3–9
Temperature Tolerates –30°C to 28°C; performs best between 5°C and 24°C
Growth Rate Moderate to fast in favorable conditions
Soil Requires well-draining soil amended with pumice for optimal root aeration and moisture control
Watering Drought-tolerant; water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings
Fertilizing Apply a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during spring and early summer growing season
Light Prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade; best flower color in full sunlight
Pests and Diseases Resistant to most pests and diseases; watch for aphids or root rot in poorly draining conditions
Propagation
Easily propagated from stem cuttings or division in spring or early summer. Simply press cuttings into dry soil and water sparingly until established.
