Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sedum album ‘Purple Ice’
Origin and Habitat:
Sedum album is native to a wide range of Europe, where it grows naturally on rocky outcrops, dry slopes, and gravelly soils with excellent drainage. It thrives in exposed environments with full sun, low fertility, and minimal moisture. The cultivar ‘Purple Ice’ has been selected for its distinctive cool-toned foliage and seasonal color shifts. Like the species, it is highly adaptable to harsh conditions, making it suitable for green roofs, rock gardens, and drought-tolerant landscapes.
Description:
Sedum album ‘Purple Ice’ is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent reaching 2–4 inches tall and spreading 12–24 inches wide. It features small, rounded, fleshy leaves that display soft green tones with hints of silvery-purple, intensifying to deeper purplish hues under cool temperatures and strong sunlight. In early to mid-summer, clusters of tiny, star-shaped white to pale pink flowers emerge just above the foliage, creating a delicate contrast against the cool-toned leaves. Its dense, spreading habit makes it ideal as a groundcover or container accent.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 3 to 9.
Temperature: Tolerates temperatures from -30°C to 35°C.
Growth Rate: Fast, quickly forming dense mats.
Soil: Requires sharply draining soil; amend with pumice to enhance drainage and root health.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant once established.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, though minimal feeding is required.
Light: Thrives in full sun; best coloration develops under strong light and cooler conditions.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-free; susceptible to root rot in poorly drained or overly wet soils.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by stem cuttings or division. Place cuttings on well-draining, pumice-rich soil and allow them to root with minimal moisture.
