Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sedum album ‘Green Ice’
Origin and Habitat:
Sedum album is native to Europe, where it is commonly found growing on rocky outcrops, dry hillsides, and gravelly soils with excellent drainage. These environments are characterized by full sun exposure, low nutrient availability, and infrequent rainfall. The cultivar ‘Green Ice’ has been selected for its cool, fresh green tones and dense growth habit. Like the species, it is highly adaptable to drought and poor soils, making it ideal for rock gardens, green roofs, and low-maintenance landscapes.
Description:
Sedum album ‘Green Ice’ is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent reaching 2–4 inches in height and spreading 12–24 inches wide. It features small, rounded, fleshy leaves in soft green tones that may develop subtle pale or cool undertones under bright light. The foliage forms a dense, carpet-like groundcover. In early to mid-summer, clusters of tiny, star-shaped white flowers rise slightly above the foliage, creating a delicate contrast. Its clean, uniform appearance makes it a versatile choice for both modern and naturalistic plantings.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 3 to 9.
Temperature: Tolerates temperatures from -30°C to 35°C.
Growth Rate: Fast, quickly forming dense mats.
Soil: Requires sharply draining soil; amend with pumice to ensure proper aeration and prevent root rot.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Extremely drought-tolerant once established.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, though minimal feeding is needed.
Light: Thrives in full sun to light shade; best density and color occur in strong light.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-free; may be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained or overly wet conditions.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by stem cuttings or division. Place cuttings on well-draining, pumice-rich soil and allow them to root with minimal moisture.
