Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Sedum album ‘Coral Carpet’
Origin and Habitat:
Sedum album is native to Europe, particularly in rocky, dry regions stretching from the Mediterranean to northern temperate zones. It grows naturally on limestone outcrops, gravelly soils, and open, sun-exposed slopes where drainage is excellent and nutrients are minimal. The cultivar ‘Coral Carpet’ has been selected for its vibrant seasonal color changes and dense, mat-forming habit. Like the species, it thrives in harsh, drought-prone environments and is well adapted to green roofs, rock gardens, and container plantings.
Description:
Sedum album ‘Coral Carpet’ is a low-growing, spreading succulent that forms a dense groundcover reaching 2–4 inches in height and spreading 12–24 inches wide. It features tiny, rounded, bead-like leaves that shift from green in spring to warm coral, orange, and reddish tones in cooler weather or full sun. In early to mid-summer, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers that rise slightly above the foliage, creating a soft, cloud-like effect. Its fine texture and seasonal color variation make it highly ornamental in mass plantings.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 3 to 9.
Temperature: Tolerates temperatures from -30°C to 35°C.
Growth Rate: Fast, quickly forming dense mats.
Soil: Requires sharply draining soil; amend with pumice to improve drainage and aeration.
Watering: Water sparingly once established. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Highly drought-tolerant.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, though minimal feeding is required.
Light: Thrives in full sun; best color develops under strong light conditions.
Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-free; may experience root rot in poorly drained soils or overly wet conditions.
Propagation:
Easily propagated by stem cuttings or division. Simply place cuttings on well-draining soil and allow them to root with minimal moisture.
