Origin and Habitat:
Pleiospilos nelii, commonly known as "Split Rock," is native to South Africa, thriving in the arid and semi-arid regions of the Cape Province. It naturally occurs in rocky areas where its unique stone-like appearance helps it camouflage, reducing the risk of herbivory. Adapted to low rainfall and extreme sunlight, it thrives in well-draining, gravelly soils.
Description:
This compact, clump-forming succulent reaches a size of about 2-3 inches tall and wide. It consists of pairs of thick, fleshy, gray-green leaves with a distinctive split down the middle, mimicking a rock-like appearance. In late summer to early autumn, it produces large, fragrant, daisy-like flowers in vibrant yellow or orange hues, which open during the day and close at night.
