Pot Size: 2.5"

Accepted Scientific Name: Parodia magnifica

Origin and Habitat:
Parodia magnifica, also known as the Balloon Cactus, is native to southern Brazil, specifically the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and parts of Uruguay. It inhabits rocky grasslands and open slopes at elevations of 150–600 meters, where it receives full sunlight and experiences warm, humid summers and cool, dry winters. The soils in its native habitat are gritty, mineral-rich, and well-draining, preventing water accumulation around the roots. Adapted to high light and periodic drought, this species stores water in its thick, ribbed stem and produces a waxy coating to reduce moisture loss.

Description:
Parodia magnifica is a globular to short columnar cactus that grows up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) tall and 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) wide. The body is blue-green to gray-green, with 11–15 rounded ribs lined with small, golden-yellow areoles bearing short, soft spines. As the plant matures, it can form small clusters. In summer, Parodia magnifica produces brilliant yellow, funnel-shaped flowers up to 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter that emerge from the crown, contrasting beautifully against its blue-green body.

Cultivation:
Zone: 9–11
Temperature: Ideal range 10–30°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate, with steady growth under bright, warm conditions.
Soil: Use a gritty, well-draining mix of pumice, perlite, and coarse loam.
Watering: Water thoroughly in the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings; keep nearly dry in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers full sun to bright, indirect light; develops best color and firm form with ample light.
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant, but may attract mealybugs or develop root rot if overwatered. Maintain good drainage and airflow.

Propagation:
Propagate from seeds sown in warm, bright conditions or by offsets if present. Seeds germinate readily in 2–4 weeks when kept slightly moist.
