Pot Size: 2.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Mammillaria zeillmanniana f. albiflora
Origin and Habitat:
Native to central Mexico, Mammillaria zeillmanniana thrives in arid and semi-arid regions, particularly in rocky, well-draining soils at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. It grows in dry scrublands and among rocks, benefiting from seasonal rains and strong sunlight. This species has evolved to withstand drought and poor soil conditions by storing water in its fleshy stems.
Description:
Mammillaria zeillmanniana f. albiflora is a small, globular cactus that reaches about 4 inches (10 cm) in height and 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter. It forms dense clusters over time. Its body is covered in soft white spines, arranged radially with slightly longer central spines. The most striking feature is its creamy-white flowers, which appear in spring and summer, forming a ring around the top of the plant. The flowers are small, funnel-shaped, and contrast beautifully with the white-spined body.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers 10°C to 35°C; avoid exposure to temperatures below 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate; offsets freely to form clumps.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light enhances flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, and rot if overwatered.
Propagation:
Propagated easily from seeds or by removing and replanting offsets from mature clusters.
