Accepted Scientific Name:

Mammillaria zeillmanniana cv. Praecox

Origin and Habitat:

Native to central Mexico, Mammillaria zeillmanniana thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. It is well-adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, receiving seasonal rainfall and intense sunlight. This cultivar, Praecox, is selected for its early and prolific flowering, making it a popular ornamental variety.

Description:

Mammillaria zeillmanniana cv. Praecox is a small, globular cactus that forms dense clumps over time, reaching up to 4 inches (10 cm) in height and 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter. Its body is covered in soft white radial spines with longer central spines. This cultivar is distinguished by its early blooming and abundant pink to magenta flowers, which form a crown around the apex of the plant in spring and summer. The flowers are funnel-shaped and contrast beautifully with the cactus’s spiny texture.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers 10°C to 35°C; avoid temperatures below 5°C.

Watering: Water moderately in the growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light encourages flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, and root rot if overwatered.
