Pot Size: 1 gal
Accepted Scientific Name: Hosta ‘First Blush’
Origin and Habitat:
Hosta ‘First Blush’ is a modern hybrid cultivar derived from species native to Japan and surrounding regions of East Asia, where Hostas naturally grow in shaded woodland settings with cool, moist conditions. These environments provide rich organic soils and consistent moisture, protected from harsh sun by tree canopies. This cultivar was specifically bred for its unique red pigmentation, a rare trait in Hostas, particularly noticeable during early spring growth and extending into the leaf petioles and veins under ideal conditions.
Description:
Hosta ‘First Blush’ is a medium-sized, upright clump-forming perennial reaching approximately 12–15 inches in height and 24–30 inches in width. The leaves are elongated, slightly wavy, and pointed, emerging in spring with a distinctive red blush that spreads from the petioles into the veins before gradually softening to green as the season progresses. Red petioles remain a striking feature throughout the growing season. In mid-summer, slender scapes rise above the foliage bearing tubular, soft lavender flowers that attract pollinators and add vertical interest.
Cultivation:
Zone: 3–9
Temperature: -40°C to 30°C
Growth rate: Moderate
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and pumice for aeration
Watering: Maintain evenly moist soil during active growth; avoid letting soil dry out completely
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season
Light: Partial shade is ideal; morning sun enhances red coloration, avoid intense afternoon sun
Pests and diseases: May be affected by slugs and snails; ensure good drainage to prevent crown rot
Propagation:
Easily propagated by division in early spring or fall. Carefully lift and separate mature clumps, ensuring each division contains roots and shoots, then replant immediately in prepared soil.
