Accepted Scientific Name: Euphorbia stellata

Origin and Habitat:

Euphorbia stellata is native to the arid regions of South Africa, particularly in rocky outcrops and well-draining soils. It thrives in semi-desert environments where it experiences seasonal rainfall and prolonged dry periods. The plant's adaptation to extreme conditions includes a thickened, tuberous caudex that stores water, allowing it to survive in drought-prone areas. The habitat provides ample sunlight, which promotes compact growth and vibrant coloration.

Description:

This striking caudiciform succulent features a thick, fleshy underground caudex that can reach up to 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter, supporting slender, radiating branches that grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) long. The segmented, green to reddish-brown stems have small, paired spines along their length. Euphorbia stellata produces small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow cyathia (flowers) at the tips of its branches. Its unique star-like growth pattern and attractive caudex make it a sought-after species among succulent collectors.

Cultivation:

Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9-11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15-35°C; can tolerate brief drops to 5°C if kept dry.
Growth Rate: Slow-growing but develops a well-formed caudex over time.
Soil: Requires a well-draining mix with pumice to prevent root rot.
Watering: Water moderately during active growth, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; bright light enhances growth and caudex development.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot if overwatered. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent fungal infections.
