Accepted Scientific Name: Euphorbia horrida ‘Norveldensis’

Origin and Habitat:
Euphorbia horrida is native to the semi-arid regions of South Africa, primarily in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. It grows on rocky slopes and grasslands where well-drained soil and seasonal rainfall dictate its growth cycle. The habitat is characterized by hot summers, cooler dry winters, and periods of drought. Plants often grow in association with other succulents and low shrubs, relying on their spiny ridges and cryptic coloration for protection against grazing animals. The ‘Norveldensis’ form is a horticultural selection known for its compact, strikingly ribbed body and attractive clustering habit.

Description:
This cultivar forms a clustering, columnar succulent with ribbed, blue-green stems that may reach 12–18 inches tall and 3–4 inches wide. Prominent spines line the ribs, giving a cactus-like appearance, though it belongs to Euphorbiaceae. Over time, it offsets to form large clumps. Small yellow-green cyathia (flowers) appear at the stem tips in summer, adding subtle seasonal interest.
