Pot Size: 3.5"

Accepted Scientific Name: Epiphyllum hybrid 'Zinger o-pur'

Origin and Habitat:
Epiphyllum hybrids trace their ancestry to epiphytic cacti native to the humid rainforests of Central and South America. These species evolved to grow upon tree trunks and within mossy crevices of the forest canopy, where light is filtered and rainfall is frequent. Instead of rooting in dense soils, they thrive in decomposed plant material, bark, and organic matter, which provide excellent aeration and drainage. The hybrid 'Zinger o-pur' carries these rainforest traits, preferring a culture that mimics dappled light, consistent moisture, and airy soil enriched with pumice and organic components.

Description:
Epiphyllum hybrid 'Zinger o-pur' is admired for its exotic flowers and lush, flat green stems. Mature plants reach 12 to 24 inches tall, with trailing or arching stems extending up to 36 inches. The large flowers can span 6 to 8 inches in diameter, showcasing bold shades of deep red to crimson with delicate gradients across the petals. The floral display is both vibrant and elegant, contrasting beautifully against the segmented green stems. When in full bloom, this hybrid creates a dramatic focal point suitable for hanging baskets, containers, or greenhouse displays.

Cultivation:
Zone: Best grown in Zones 10–11; must be overwintered indoors in cooler climates.
Temperature: Thrives in 18–30°C and should be protected from cold below 10°C.
Growth rate: Moderate to fast, especially under warm and humid conditions.
Soil: Requires a free-draining medium with pumice, orchid bark, and organic matter for strong root development.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering but allow slight drying between waterings. Reduce watering during dormancy.
Fertilizing: Apply diluted cactus or orchid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for optimal blooms.
Light: Prefers bright, filtered light and protection from direct midday sun to avoid scorching.
Pests and Diseases: Can be affected by mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Excess moisture may cause root or stem rot.

Propagation:
Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus before planting in a free-draining medium. Roots typically form within a few weeks under warm, humid conditions.
