Pot Size: 3.5"

Accepted Scientific Name: Epiphyllum hybrid 'Kathy Bagwell'

Origin and Habitat:
Epiphyllum hybrids are the result of extensive breeding between species of epiphytic cacti native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. These wild ancestors typically grow as epiphytes on trees, where they benefit from filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. In their natural habitat, they are found in shaded canopies and rocky outcrops, thriving in organic debris and mosses rather than soil. The hybrid 'Kathy Bagwell' inherits these adaptations, performing best in conditions that replicate its rainforest origins—warm temperatures, indirect light, and free-draining soil rich in organic material.

Description:
Epiphyllum hybrid 'Kathy Bagwell' is a spectacular flowering cactus prized for its large, showy blossoms. Mature plants can reach 12 to 24 inches in height with flat, leaf-like stems that can extend 18 to 36 inches long. The flowers are dramatic, often spanning 6 to 8 inches across, with a blend of radiant pink to magenta petals edged in softer tones, creating a striking gradient effect. The blooms open in succession, providing an extended floral display that contrasts beautifully with the lush green stems. This hybrid is highly sought after for its exotic beauty and reliability as a container or hanging basket plant.

Cultivation:
Zone: Best grown in Zones 10–11 but can be overwintered indoors in cooler climates.
Temperature: Ideal range is 18–30°C; protect from temperatures below 10°C.
Growth rate: Moderate to fast under warm, humid, and bright filtered light conditions.
Soil: Requires a free-draining mix with pumice, orchid bark, and organic matter for aeration and moisture control.
Watering: Keep evenly moist during the growing season, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted cactus or orchid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth and budding.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light; avoid harsh midday sun which may scorch the stems.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Root rot may occur if soil is not well-draining or if overwatered.

Propagation:
This hybrid is best propagated by stem cuttings, which should be allowed to callus before planting in a well-draining mix. Rooting usually occurs within a few weeks in warm conditions. Seed propagation is less common as it does not guarantee hybrid consistency.
