Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Epiphyllum ‘French Gold’
Origin and Habitat:
Epiphyllum ‘French Gold’ is a hybrid orchid cactus developed for its vibrant floral display. The parent species of Epiphyllum originate from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where they grow as epiphytes on tree trunks and branches. In their natural habitat, these plants receive filtered light, high humidity, and regular rainfall, while roots remain in airy, organic debris rather than mineral soil. ‘French Gold’ retains these jungle cactus characteristics, thriving in bright, indirect light and well-draining, organic-rich growing media suited for container and greenhouse cultivation.
Description:
Epiphyllum ‘French Gold’ is a pendulous, branching cactus with flattened, strap-like green stems that can grow 12–36 inches long. The stems are segmented and arch gracefully, making it ideal for hanging baskets. This cultivar is prized for its large, showy flowers that can reach 6–8 inches across. Blooms are rich golden-yellow to amber in color, often with lighter inner petals and a soft sheen. Flowers typically open in late spring to early summer and may be lightly fragrant. The dramatic blooms contrast beautifully against the lush green stems.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 10 to 11; grow indoors in cooler climates.
Temperature: Ideal range is 15°C to 28°C; protect from temperatures below 7°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under warm, humid conditions.
Soil: Use a well-draining, organic-rich mix amended with pumice to maintain airflow around roots.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer begins to dry, keeping soil lightly moist during active growth. Reduce watering in winter.
Fertilizing: Apply diluted balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or light shade. Avoid harsh direct midday sun.
Pests and Diseases: May be susceptible to mealybugs, scale, or spider mites. Overwatering can cause root or stem rot.
Propagation:
Easily propagated from stem cuttings. Allow cut ends to callous for several days before planting in pumice-rich, well-draining soil. Keep lightly moist until rooted.
