Pot Size:

Accepted Scientific Name: Epiphyllum 'Aristocrat'

Origin and Habitat:
Epiphyllum hybrids originate from species native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Central and South America. In their natural range, they grow as epiphytes on tree branches or occasionally as lithophytes among rocks. These environments are humid and shaded, with filtered light passing through dense forest canopies. Organic debris provides nutrients, while the plants adapt to absorb moisture from the air. The hybrid ‘Aristocrat’ has been selectively bred for its impressive ornamental flowers, continuing the legacy of epiphytic cacti cultivated for decorative appeal in collections and gardens worldwide.

Description:
Epiphyllum 'Aristocrat' is an elegant hybrid admired for its large, aristocratic flowers and graceful stem growth. The stems are flat, segmented, and arching, reaching 18–24 inches long, forming a cascading effect. Its blooms are striking, typically 7–8 inches across, with wide petals arranged in a layered, starburst shape. Petal coloration is a solid red with a hint of pink and slight orange tone down the center of the petals.   The blossoms are fragrant and long-lasting, creating a refined tropical display that exemplifies the hybrid’s regal name.

Cultivation:
Zone: Best grown in Zones 10–11; indoor or greenhouse cultivation recommended in cooler climates.
Temperature: Ideal range is 15–27°C; protect from temperatures below 5°C.
Growth rate: Moderate, with strong development in warm and humid conditions.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix with organic material and pumice to maintain aeration and prevent waterlogging.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during growth and flowering; reduce watering during winter dormancy.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks in active growing and blooming periods.
Light: Bright, indirect light is preferred; avoid direct harsh sunlight that may burn stems.

Propagation:
Propagate by stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus before planting in a free-draining substrate.
