Accepted Scientific Name
Echeveria ‘Orpet’
Origin and Habitat
Echeveria ‘Orpet’ is a hybrid succulent derived from species native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico and Central America. These areas are characterized by rocky terrains, well-draining soils, and warm climates with intense sunlight. Echeveria ‘Orpet’ is cultivated for its symmetrical rosettes and delicate flowers, making it a favorite in ornamental gardening. It is widely adapted to container gardening and xeriscaping, thriving in similar dry, sunny conditions.
Description
Echeveria ‘Orpet’ forms compact rosettes that grow up to 6 inches in diameter. The fleshy leaves are pale green to bluish with a hint of pink or red along the edges, especially when exposed to bright sunlight. In late spring to early summer, it produces tall stalks with clusters of bell-shaped flowers in coral to orange hues, adding a vibrant contrast to the rosettes.
Cultivation
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 10–11.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 10°C and 30°C but is not frost-tolerant. Protect from temperatures below 4°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate, with potential to form clusters over time.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix or gritty loam. Incorporating perlite or pumice improves drainage.
Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter dormancy period.
Fertilizing: Feed with diluted succulent fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.
Light: Thrives in full sun. Intense sunlight enhances the pink or red margins of the leaves and keeps plant compact
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, and root rot if overwatered. Regular inspection and proper watering practices minimize these issues.
Propagation
Echeveria ‘Orpet’ can be propagated through leaf cuttings, stem cuttings, or offsets.
