Echeveria 'Lilac Wonder'
Origin and Habitat
Echeveria 'Lilac Wonder' is a hybrid succulent that originates from the family Crassulaceae, native to the arid regions of Mexico and Central America. These areas are characterized by dry, rocky landscapes with minimal rainfall, and the plant is adapted to thrive in well-draining soils and full sunlight. The hybrid was cultivated to highlight its unique lilac hues and compact rosette form, making it a popular choice for succulent enthusiasts and gardeners looking for a striking, easy-care plant for containers, rock gardens, or decorative arrangements.
Description
Echeveria 'Lilac Wonder' forms a dense rosette that typically reaches 6–8 inches in diameter, with thick, fleshy leaves. The leaves are a soft pastel lilac-gray with subtle pinkish undertones, which intensify with more sunlight exposure. The rosette shape is symmetrical, compact, and striking in appearance. In spring and summer, the plant produces tall, slender stems that bloom with tubular flowers in shades of orange and yellow, adding a vibrant contrast to its calming foliage.
Cultivation
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9–11.
Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C. Protect from frost and freezing conditions below 4°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate growth, developing into a full rosette over time.
Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, ideally enriched with pumice to ensure good aeration and prevent root rot.
Watering: Water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter to avoid overwatering.
Fertilizing: Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a diluted succulent fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter when the plant is dormant.
Light: Requires full sun for the best color development and compact growth. It can tolerate some partial shade, but this may reduce its vibrant lilac hues.
Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests but may attract aphids or mealybugs. Root rot can occur if overwatered or if the soil doesn't drain properly.
Propagation
Echeveria 'Lilac Wonder' is typically propagated by leaf cuttings or offsets. To propagate by leaf cuttings, allow the cut end to callus for 1–2 days before planting in well-draining soil. Offsets can be carefully separated from the base and replanted. Keep the soil lightly moist until new growth emerges.
