Pot Size: 3.5"
Accepted Scientific Name:
Echeveria agavoides ‘Red Beauty’
Origin and Habitat:
Echeveria agavoides is native to central Mexico, where it grows in rocky, well-drained soils on slopes and cliffs in semi-arid regions. These habitats receive bright sunlight, low humidity, and seasonal rainfall, with long dry periods. The cultivar ‘Red Beauty’ has been selected for its enhanced red coloration and compact form. Like the species, it is well adapted to high light, excellent drainage, and drought conditions, making it ideal for container culture and xeric plantings.
Description:
Echeveria agavoides ‘Red Beauty’ is a compact, symmetrical rosette-forming succulent reaching 4–6 inches tall and 6–8 inches wide. It features thick, triangular leaves in light red tones, with vivid red tips that intensify under strong light and cooler temperatures. The rosette resembles a small agave in form, with sharply pointed leaves. In late spring to summer, it produces slender flower stalks bearing bell-shaped flowers in shades of red with yellow interiors, adding contrast above the foliage.
Cultivation:
Zone: Suitable for USDA zones 9 to 11.
Temperature: Prefers 10°C to 30°C; protect from frost below 5°C.
Growth Rate: Moderate under optimal conditions.
Soil: Requires well-draining soil; amend with pumice to improve aeration and prevent excess moisture.
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid water sitting in the rosette.
Fertilizing: Apply a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.
Light: Thrives in full sun to bright indirect light; strong light enhances red coloration and compact growth.
Pests and Diseases: May be susceptible to mealybugs and aphids. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Propagation:
Propagated from offsets or leaf cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous before placing on well-draining, pumice-rich soil to root.
